Design Interactive and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Win Army Contract to Develop Team-Based Learning Solution

February 8th, 2017

Design Interactive was awarded an Army Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) as a subcontractor to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to foster inter-professional education (IPE) for medical teams. A pedagogically-sound and generalizable framework focused on team behavior training will be developed.

INTEL will provide a way forward for individualized and competency-based training, discovery of lessons learned, and continuous improvement to pave the way to highly effective medical teams. The goal of this effort is to help eliminate behaviors that lead to medical errors.

Preventable medical errors are estimated to be the third most common cause of death in the United States. Breakdowns in teamwork and communication are suggested to be the root cause of errors in more than 50% of such adverse events, with communication failures being linked to over 1,700 deaths over the last five years. A study on 23,000 malpractice lawsuits found that over 7,000 had problems that were directly caused by miscommunication, including 37% of high-severity injury cases and over a quarter of surgery cases. INTEL will help healthcare organizations decrease these cases, ultimately saving both lives and money.
