New Patent: Real-Time Mobile/Wearable Stress Management
Design Interactive is proud to announce our Biosignature Analytics team’s new patent award. DI has been awarded a patent for “System, Method, and Computer Program Product for the real-time mobile evaluation of physiological stress”. This a direct result of the significant work the team has performed in the area of stress and resilience monitoring using wearable devices.
Led by Dr. Brent Winslow, the Biosignature Analytics team created a classifier of stress. The team captured gold standard physiological measures of stress such as salivary cortisol while evoking stress responses from subjects using validated psychosocial stress tests. The resultant classifier has proven to be over 95% accurate.
This classifier, called the Operation Stress Index (OSI), has been implemented in wearable ecosystems such as DI’s mCALM. When implemented in such solutions, the OSI enables real time measurement of stress through wrist worn devices. mCALM, a mobile anxiety support system that can be used during the course of anxiety or PTSD treatment, can geo-locate the stress response and recommend mindfulness exercises. In a clinical pilot at the Philadelphia VA, use of the OSI within the mCALM system demonstrated better health outcomes for patients compared to a control group.
DI is now using the OSI in many other efforts, including to support the creation of validated training scenarios for first responders and the military. Trainers in these domains must prepare trainees for the stress to be encountered in operational environments. The OSI will help to ensure that the training scenarios, both virtual and live, are evoking a realistic stress response and ultimately best prepare trainees.
There has also been interest in using the OSI within wellness programs to help monitor and prevent nursing burnout or in vehicles to monitor drivers, both consumer and heavy trucking.
